HSS Confined Space Awareness Course FAQs

    About Confined Spaces

Q1. What is a 'confined space'?
A confined space is not simply a 'small space'. It is classed as any enclosed area where there may be a risk of serious injury due to hazards such as poor air quality, toxic gases, fire, flooding or lack of oxygen. These spaces are not defined by size alone but by the risk present inside them.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q2. What industries require confined space training?
Confined spaces is commonly required across construction, utilities, civil engineering, drainage, rail, facilities management, manufacturing, telecoms and waste management. These sectors regularly work in environments such as sewers, tanks, silos, shafts, ductwork, utility vaults, pipework and crawl spaces.
    __________________________________________________________________________

    About the Course

Q3. What is confined space awareness training?
This is an introductory course designed to help delegates recognise confined space hazards, understand the risks involved, and support safe working practices. It does not qualify delegates to enter or work within confined spaces.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q4. Why is confined space awareness training important?
Training aims to help reduce common workplace failures identified by the HSE, including missed safety checks, poor rescue planning and complacency. Confined space incidents in the UK continue to result in fatalities each year, often linked to poor preparation and unsafe rescue attempts without proper equipment.
    __________________________________________________________________________
